Royal Albert Dock Liverpool celebrates its 40th anniversary

This Sunday (4th August), the dock will be celebrating 40 years since it officially reopened as a new commercial and leisure destination back in 1984, starting its journey to becoming the most popular tourist attraction outside of London.*

Designed by Jesse Hartley, the dock played a vital part in the global trade industry when it first opened in 1846. Fast forward to 1952, and the dock was awarded Grade I listed status, helping the iconic landmark to now hold the prestigious title of being the largest single collection of Grade I listed buildings in the UK.

After nearly a decade of closure, after falling into disrepair in 1972, the dock began its next chapter into becoming a global leisure destination, welcoming much-loved attractions the Maritime Museum, Tate Liverpool, The Beatles Story and more over the years.

In 2018 the dock secured Royal status, and fast forward to the present day, Royal Albert Dock Liverpool is now home to a variety of the city’s best independent and well-established restaurants, shops and attractions, along with two hotels.
