Rare notebook with handwritten 'Hey Jude' lyrics unveiled at The Beatles Story

23rd February, 2022

The Beatles Story has unveiled a new display dedicated to a personal notebook belonging to the Fab Four’s Tour Manager, Mal Evans.

The previously unseen piece of memorabilia, compiled between 1967-1968, features handwritten ‘Hey Jude’ lyrics from Paul McCartney as well as part-lyrics for other hits, including ‘Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’, ‘The Benefit of Mr Kite’ and 'All Together Now’. Alongside original doodles, scribbles and poetry from John, Paul, George, Ringo and Mal, a design for the instantly-recognisable ‘Sgt Pepper’ drum skin can also be found inside.

While the display will showcase the ‘ultimate memento’ open on its ‘Hey Jude’ spread, a digital screen will reveal the contents, giving visitors the chance to see every detail inside in the notebook, page by page.

Originally put up for auction in 1998 by Mal’s widow, Lily Evans, the item was purchased by Liverpool businessman, Alan Murphy for his daughter Davinia’s 21st birthday, who played ‘Jude’ in the popular soap series, Hollyoaks. Davinia has kindly donated the item to the exhibition for visitors to the dock to enjoy.
