New at the Nest

Dock’s independent art and design store adds a range of talented new suppliers for summer...

The Dock’s shops always offer something a bit different and special. Independent art and design store The Nest has announced a range of new suppliers, just in time for Liverpool’s Independents Week at the beginning of July.

Nest owner Katherine Caldwell has built up a varied range of local suppliers since she opened the Nest, just over a year ago. The team celebrated its first birthday at the beginning of June with an open weekend of activities, and an open call for new suppliers.

The popularity of buying local, handmade and unique gifts and homeware has really exploded over the last couple of years, and the Nest curates one of Liverpool’s best shopping ranges. It’s a vibrant, creative collection that owner Katherine is always adding to.

We popped in to have a look at the Nest’s newest discoveries.

"I was absolutely blown away by the number of people who came along to our open call day at the Dock,” she says “… especially as it was during Storm Hannah! People braved the elements and brought along an incredible range of work for us to look at; the selection really was a very high standard. It’s so important for me to meet the suppliers – I feel the person behind the work is just as important as the piece in front of you, and getting to know and form a relationship with them is an important part of how The Nest works. So much is simply transactional these days that it makes me even more determined to share the stories of my suppliers on their behalf"

Jayne Tapp

Local artist Jayne was discovered by the Nest team as part of its open call for new designers. She makes her cards with off-cuts of wood that would otherwise have gone to waste, laser-cutting intricate designs for birthday cards and new baby cards, bon voyage styles and a mini maritime Ferry ‘cross the Mersey card. So not only are they cute, they’re eco-friendly and sustainable too.

Nicola Fernandes

Nicola was an instant hit at the Nest’s first birthday party. She joined the team over the weekend, sketching three minute portraits of Nest customers. Another artist discovered as part of its open call, Nicola's in-store showcase opened last week, with a great range of these colourful cards and prints.

Poppy Elmhirst, Clay Elm

Potter Poppy makes her ceramics just down the road from the Dock. Her selection at the Nest features a range of mugs – including ceramic coffee cups with eco lids – cups and plates, decorative pinch pots and hanging plant pots. Contemporary in style with a lovely speckled finish, Poppy’s pottery is the ultimate in Scandi-style chic.

Jules Cooke

Crafter Jules joined the Nest earlier this year, and her cards have gone down a storm over Valentine’s and Father’s Day. She makes all of her cards by hand, crocheting tiny details including hearts, apples and balloons with lovely languid lettering.

Tom Brown

Tom is a Manchester-based artist, whose first designs were of the Manchester bee. Tom expanded his range to celebrate our great Northern cities, introducing an iconic Liver bird to his collection, which he took along to the Nest’s open call. He makes all of the Liver birds by hand, securing them in deep box frames, in a variety of colours including bronze, and rainbow wings. We also love this special double Liver bird version, dubbed ‘The Liver bird Lovebirds’ by the Nest team. Tom is also the Nest’s current showcase star.

As a result of the success of the open call, the Nest now has a monthly showcase, which will feature a different supplier every month, right up until Christmas Eve. Pop in and have a look – we’re convinced you’ll find plenty to catch your eye.
